Amazon is derived from Greek Mythology. In Greek Mythology, Amazon described a powerful, strong woman. Today this term has also been adopted to described a particularly powerful, strong lesbian.
Baby Dyke
Baby dyke has two applications. Firstly it refers to someone who has just come out of the closet and a "new" lesbian. Secondly, the term also refers to a young lesbian.
Bisexual
Bisexual refers to a person who is attracted to both males and females.
Boi
Boi refers to a lesbian who has a boyish appearance.
Bulldyke
Bulldyke is thought to be a negative term that refers to a lesbian who is very masculine.
Butch
A Butch also refers to a lesbian with masculine characteristics.
Cougar
Cougar has typically been used by the heterosexuak world to refer to an older woman who likes younger men. It has (although rarely) been used by the lesbian community to refer to an older lesbian that is usually thought to not be desireable.
Crone
Crone is often thought to be a negative term. Crone refers to an older lesbian. The thought is that the older lesbian with more life experience should be shown respect.
Cross Dresser
A cross dresser refers to an individual who wears the clothing of the opposite sex. Typically a cross dresser wears the clothing of their sex during work hours etc. and clothing from the opposite sex during recreational times.
De-dyking the House
De-dyking the house refers to putting away or hiding everything that would reveal that the occupants are in a gay or lesbian relationship. Sometimes partners will have two separate bedrooms set up so that when visitors come over (who do not know about their relationship), that it does not appear that they are in a relationship.
Diesel Dyke
A diesel dyke is a butchy lesbian. The diesel dyke often has an aggressive nature. Typically a diesel dyke will be employed as a truck driver or other such masculine driven industries.
Domestic Partners
Domestic partners means more than the term partner. Partner refers to two people in a relationship. Domestic partner refers to two people who are in a relationship and who live together. People in a domestic partnership are not married, nor are they in a civil union. Typically the term partner had been used for same sex relationships, but more recently it is common to hear opposite sex relationships refer to themselves as partners.
Drag King
A Drag King is a woman that dresses like a man, usually for a performance or act of some kind. Drag Kings are not necessarily lesbians.
Dyke
The term dyke refers to a lesbian. The term is usually acceptable if used by people of bisexual, gay, lesbian or transgender nature. However, dyke is a negative term if used by a heterosexual person.
Ex-Gay Therapy
Ex-gay therapy refers to the belief that lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people can be given therapy to change them into a straight person. This movement is typically driven by people of "faith."
Femme
A Femme is a feminine lesbian.
Gayborhood
Gayborhood refers to a section or location within a City that is gay friendly or that has a lot of gay stores, bars and such where gays and lesbians hang out or live.
Gaydar
Gaydar refers to one's ability to determine or tell is another person is gay or lesbian.
Gender Identitiy
Gender identity refers to the sex a person feels like on the inside. A person's gender identity does not necessarily match the sex that they were born. People of gender identity usually have a gender expression meaning that they will express their gender identity outwardly by the clothes they where or by the way they act (gender variance).
Gender Variance
Gender variance refers to the way a lesbian or gay acts in relation to their gender identity. In other words, a lesbian who feels that their gender identity is that of male typically has a gender variance (or acts) more like a male. Gender variance is opposite to the typical male acting as male and female acting as female.
Girl Crush
A girl crush is a crush between two women that is not of sexual nature.
Gold Star Lesbian
A gold star lesbian refers to a lesbian that has never had sex with the opposite sex.
Hasbian
A hasbian refers to an ex-lesbian.
Homophobia
Homophobia refers to the dislike or distain for people who are not heterosexual.
Lipstck Lesbian
A liptick lesbian refers to a lesbian who is into her lipstick (makeup), clothes and shoes. Sometimes a lipstick lesbian is also called a Barbie Doll lesbian. A lipstick lesbian is usually always seen all "dolled" up.
Lesbian
A lesbian is a woman who is attracted to other women. This same sex attraction is on a sexual and emotional level.
Lone Star Lesbian
A lone star lesbian refers to a lesbian that has only had sex with one woman.
Out of the Closet
Out of the closet refers to someone who is comfortable and open about their sexual orientation.
Pillow Queen
A pillow queen refers to a lesbian who likes to be on the receiving end of sexual pleasure and who does not want or like to return the experience.
Power Dyke
A power dyke is a lesbian in a position of power.
Second Parent Adoption
Second parent adoption refers to when one partner adopts the other partners biological child.
Sexual Orientation
Sexual orientation refers to your sexual preference whether is is heterosexual or same sex attraction.
Stone Butch Lesbian
A stone butch lesbian refers to a lesbian who likes to pleasure her partner, but does not like to herself be pleasured.
Switching Teams
Switching teams refers to the switch from a heterosexual lifestyle to a gay or lesbian lifestyle.
Queer
Queer refers to people other than heterosexuals. Queer is a negative term.
Transsexual
Transsexual refers to a person who has the desire to be the opposite sex. Sometimes transsexual people have surgery called reassignment surgery to become the sex they desire to be.
Transgender
Transgender refers to a person who outwardly expresses their gender as the opposite to their born sex.
Trans
Trans refers to transgender and transsexual people. Trans covers people of gender variance.
Two Spirited
Two spirited is an Aboriginal term refering to gays and lesbians. Aboriginal people refer to gays and lesbians as two spirited as it is believed that they have two spirits (one masculine and one feminine) and that is what drives their gay/lesbian sexual and emotional desires.
